Your Peugeot Boxer refuses to start, the anti-theft light is flashing on the dashboard, and the engine does not respond when you turn the key. This scenario, common with Peugeot commercial vehicles, often stems from a blockage in the anti-start system. The problem does not always come from a serious malfunction: a weak key battery or a communication failure between the transponder and the ECU is enough to cause everything to freeze.

Secure Gateway on recent Boxer models: a constraint that tutorials ignore

Most online guides describe procedures designed for older generation Boxers. On models produced between 2024 and 2026, Stellantis introduced a Secure Gateway that filters communications on the vehicle’s CAN network.

In practice, this gateway prevents a generic diagnostic tool from freely accessing the electronic modules. If you connect a standard OBD scanner to a recent Boxer, it will not be able to send commands to the engine ECU or the BSI (intelligent service box) without prior authorization.

This change renders some reprogramming or bypass procedures shared on forums obsolete. Before any intervention, check the year of first registration of your vehicle. If your Boxer is from after 2024, a visit to a professional equipped with a Stellantis-compatible tool often becomes the only reliable option to disable the anti-start system on Peugeot Boxer without risking damage to the electronics.

Transponder and ECU: understanding the communication chain

Before attempting to disable anything, it is essential to understand what is blocking. The anti-start system of the Peugeot Boxer relies on an exchange between three elements.

The key and its transponder

Each key contains an electronic chip (the transponder) that emits a unique code. When you insert the key into the ignition switch, an antenna placed around the ignition lock captures this code.

If the battery is weak, the signal may become too weak to be read. The result: the system interprets the key as unknown and blocks the fuel injection.

The BSI and the engine ECU

The antenna transmits the code to the BSI, which compares it to those stored in memory. If the code matches, the BSI sends an authorization to the engine ECU. The latter then releases the power to the injectors and allows the engine to start.

A malfunction at any link in this chain produces the same symptom: the starter turns, but the engine does not start.

Diagnosis before deactivation: checks to perform yourself

You may have a simple problem to solve without touching the anti-start system. Here are the points to check before considering a more significant intervention:

  • Key battery: replace it with a new battery of the same model (often CR2032 or CR1620 depending on the generation). An underpowered transponder causes intermittent blockages.
  • Condition of the key: a bent key, a cracked case, or oxidized contacts can prevent the correct reading of the transponder. Try using the spare key if you have one.
  • Battery terminals: corroded or loose terminals create micro-cuts that disrupt the BSI. Clean and tighten them before any other manipulation.
  • Anti-theft light: observe its behavior. If it flashes quickly and then turns off when you turn the key, the transponder is recognized. If it stays on steadily, the code is not accepted.

These checks take less than ten minutes and resolve a significant portion of anti-start blockages on the Boxer.

“Immo Off” intervention on the ECU: procedure and limits

When the diagnosis confirms a persistent fault in the anti-start system (faulty BSI, unrecognized transponder despite a functional key, or ECU that has lost its codes), the most common technical solution is the so-called “Immo Off” intervention.

What an Immo Off actually does

A technician connects a reprogramming tool to the engine ECU. They modify the software so that the ECU no longer requests validation of the transponder code before allowing the engine to start. The vehicle then starts with any compatible mechanical key.

This operation requires a professional diagnostic tool capable of reading and rewriting the ECU’s memory. On Boxers equipped with the Secure Gateway, the tool must also be authorized by the Stellantis gateway.

What this implies for insurance

Removing the anti-start system modifies an original security device of the vehicle. Your insurer may consider this modification as an increase in theft risk. In the event of a claim, refusal of compensation is possible if the modification has not been declared.

The rule is simple: any technical modification that changes the level of protection of the vehicle must be reported to your insurance company. Some accept the modification with an adjustment of the premium, while others refuse it.

Electrical reliability of the Boxer: a context not to be neglected

Anti-start problems on the Peugeot Boxer are not always isolated. Recent technical control analyses show that this model has a higher re-inspection rate than the average for Peugeot in the category “lamps, reflective devices, and electrical equipment.”

This observation suggests a broader fragility of the electrical circuit. A malfunctioning BSI can cause anti-start blockages, but also anomalies in lighting, wipers, or ventilation. If your Boxer exhibits multiple electrical symptoms, the problem likely exceeds just the anti-start system.

In this case, diagnosing the entire electrical network (BSI, BSM, wiring harnesses, and connectors) prevents addressing a symptom without resolving the cause. A corroded connector in the engine compartment may be enough to disrupt communication between the BSI and the ECU, simulating an anti-start fault while the system operates normally.

Disabling the anti-start system remains a last resort, to be considered after exhausting diagnostic avenues. Replacing a battery, cleaning a connector, or having a key reprogrammed by a professional resolves the majority of cases, without compromising vehicle safety or complicating your relationship with your insurer.
